Some people close their eyes and get a movie screen.

Some people close their eyes and get… the dark. No apple. No beach. No childhood bedroom. Just knowledge that those things exist.

Aphantasia is usually described as “not being able to visualize.”

That is accurate, but slightly useless. It makes the mind sound like a laptop with a broken display cable.

A better model is this:

Aphantasia is not the absence of thought. It is the absence, or near-absence, of voluntary visual imagery. The concept is old, but the modern term was coined by neurologist Adam Zeman and colleagues in 2015, which is hilariously recent for something many people have lived with forever.

So a lot of people discover it late. They hear “picture this” for decades, assume everyone is speaking poetically, then one day realize:

Wait. You people are running an internal PowerPoint?

Tiny existential jump scare. Very rude of language.

The “mind’s eye” was not a metaphor for everyone

Everyday language is full of visual commands:

For many aphantasic people, these phrases land as metaphors. You understand the instruction. You can reason about the scene. You may know the layout, the facts, the emotional meaning, and the sequence of events.

You just do not get the picture.

What the instruction says

“Picture an apple.”

For many visualizers, this creates some kind of apple-like visual experience: color, shape, lighting, maybe a table.

What may happen instead

“Apple: object, fruit, round-ish, edible.”

The idea is available. The facts are available. The image layer does not boot.

This is why discovery can feel weirdly social, not just scientific. You do not merely learn a new label. You realize that other people’s casual descriptions of thinking were sometimes literal.

The world was giving UI instructions for a feature your brain does not expose.

Not broken. Different stack.

Here is the part that matters: aphantasia does not mean “bad imagination.”

Imagination is not one thing. It is a bundle of abilities: visual imagery, spatial reasoning, memory, language, abstraction, prediction, emotion, narrative, planning, taste, and problem solving.

Aphantasia mostly concerns the visual rendering layer.

Research supports this split. In a room-memory drawing study by Wilma Bainbridge and colleagues, people with aphantasia recalled fewer visual object details, such as objects and color, but their spatial placement was preserved. They could know where things belonged without replaying a mental photograph.

That distinction is the whole game.

So the aphantasic mind is not empty. It can be intensely structured. It may think in concepts, rules, relationships, words, coordinates, physical cues, and “I know where this goes” rather than “I can see it.”

Less cinema. More architecture.

The visual cortex question: the screen may be dark, but the machine is not dead

The neuroscience is still developing, so we should not pretend the case is closed. But the broad direction is fascinating.

In typical mental imagery, the brain appears to use top-down control systems to activate visual areas. You decide to imagine something, and parts of the visual system participate in creating the conscious image.

Some recent work associated with Joel Pearson’s lab suggests a strange possibility: people with aphantasia may still show decodable visual-cortex activity during attempted imagery, even though they report no conscious picture.

That is the cursed-but-useful version of the model:

The brain may be doing some of the underlying work, but the result does not cross into conscious visual experience. Like a render job that completes somewhere in the basement and never appears on your monitor. Very enterprise software. Terrible UX.

That does not mean every aphantasic person has the same neural pattern. It means the simplistic “nothing is happening” explanation is probably too crude.

Why task systems matter more when your head has no preview window

A lot of self-help advice assumes visual simulation.

“Visualize the finish line.”

“Imagine your dream body.”

“Picture your future self.”

Cute. But if the internal preview window is closed, that advice becomes decorative nonsense.

Aphantasic planning tends to work better when it is externalized:

Try to make yourself act by mentally replaying a future reward you cannot see.

Use checklists, visible cues, calendars, boards, maps, reference images, and defaults.

This is not weakness. It is good systems design.

Cognitive scientists Andy Clark and David Chalmers argued that the mind can extend into tools and environments. In plain English: your notebook, whiteboard, calendar, saved reference image, or battle map is not just “support.” It can become part of how thinking happens.

For an aphantasic person, external tools are not productivity cosplay. They are often the missing display layer.

“Theater of the mind” is a beautiful phrase and also a tiny accessibility crime.

If the game master describes a chaotic room — pillars, goblins, a broken bridge, a burning cart, three doors, one suspicious statue — a visualizer may build a mental scene. It might be fuzzy, but it is there.

An aphantasic player may instead retain rules and relations:

The strategy can be excellent. The roleplay can be excellent. The humor can be excellent. But the “shared imaginary scene” may not be shared in the same way.

Add a battle map, though, and the problem changes. Now the visual burden is offloaded. The player can use intact spatial reasoning and logic without spending energy pretending there is a movie in the head.

That is the practical lesson: if a task relies on internal imagery, make the image external.

No shame. Just architecture.

Reading without mental movies

A common misunderstanding is that if you cannot picture the book, you cannot enjoy the book.

Wrong. Too visually supremacist. Straight to jail.

Reading can work through many channels:

Research by Laura Speed and colleagues suggests people with aphantasia may report less visual imagery and sometimes less absorption in scenes, but not necessarily less pleasure in reading overall.

That tracks. A book does not need to become a movie to work. Sometimes it works because the sentence has teeth. Sometimes because the idea clicks. Sometimes because the structure is elegant. Sometimes because a character’s situation is conceptually devastating even if nobody is visually rendered.

There is also evidence that visual imagery can amplify emotion. In a 2021 scary-story study, Wicken, Keogh, and Pearson found that people with aphantasia showed much lower skin-conductance responses while reading frightening imagined scenarios, but normal responses to actually seeing frightening images.

Translation: if there is no internal horror movie, the body may not jump as hard from the written description alone.

But emotional response is not only sweat. Empathy is not only simulation. Art is not only rendering.

Sometimes the feeling arrives through meaning.

Aphantasia, SDAM, and the memory caveat

One careful distinction: aphantasia is about voluntary visual imagery. It is not automatically the same as SDAM — severely deficient autobiographical memory — where people have difficulty vividly re-experiencing personal memories.

They can overlap, but they are not identical.

This matters because people often bundle everything together:

Some people have several of these. Some do not. Human brains are rude little configuration files, not clean product SKUs.

So the useful move is not “diagnose the entire mind from one label.”

The useful move is to ask: which internal tools are available, and which ones should be externalized?

The practical operating manual

If your mind does not render images on command, stop building life systems that require mental rendering.

Use the stack you actually have.

Aphantasia is not failed imagination. It is imagination without a built-in visual display.

Try this instead:

  1. Replace visualization with specification. Do not “picture the outcome.” Define the constraints, examples, non-examples, and next action.
  2. Make invisible state visible. Use calendars, checklists, notes, kanban boards, labels, sketches, diagrams, photos, and reminders.
  3. Use reference images shamelessly. If a visual decision matters, put the visual in front of your eyes. Do not cosplay as a projector.
  4. Plan by environment. Put cues where behavior should happen: shoes near the door, book on the desk, task list where your attention actually lands.
  5. Treat language as a design tool. Good naming, strong categories, and crisp principles may do more for you than mental imagery ever would.
  6. For games and collaboration, externalize the shared scene. Maps, mockups, diagrams, tokens, screenshots. Save everyone from fuzzy telepathy.

The unseen architecture

The aphantasic mind can look strange from the outside because society assumes imagination is visual by default.

But visual imagination is only one interface.

Some minds paint.

Some minds map.

Some minds code.

Some minds keep a quiet relational database of facts, constraints, rhythms, and spatial coordinates, then somehow navigate the world perfectly well while everyone else is busy hallucinating apples.

That is not a deficit story.

That is an architecture story.

And once you understand the architecture, the answer is obvious: stop trying to install a movie screen. Build better controls.
